Revance, the first ever topical botox….

RT001, otherwise known as Revance, is a topical gel formulation of botulinum toxin type A or neuromodulator. It decreases the muscle activity (similar to Botox Cosmetic, Xeomin and Dysport) by penetrating directly through the skin instead of being injected with a needle.

The treatment will only be applied in a doctors office and will need to stay on the skin for approximately 20-30 minutes. Results could possibly be better than injections as the application will be more uniformly applied to the muscle as oppose to injections that are spread over the muscle in an interrupted manner.

Revance is also being researched for excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) in the underarm. Applying a topical gel to this tender area instead of 25-40 injections would be a welcomed relief for patients with this problem.

Revance doesn’t appear to work on the frown area (glabella) due to the depth of the muscles in this area, nor the hands/feet as the skin is too thick for it to penetrate.

Currently in Phase 3 clinical development in the United States, Revance is expected to be available late 2014 or early 2015.

Until next time….
